Getting to know Sophie from Yellow Jungle Kids Wholesale Fashion

Today we are speaking with Sophie Martzloff, a French-born fashion designer now living in Sydney, Australia. After many years working for children’s designer brands in Paris, she has moved close to the sea down under and found all the inspiration she needed to start her own Kids Wholesale Fashion brand - Yellow Jungle.
Tell us a little about Yellow Jungle, how did you get started?
Yellow Jungle started in 2018, a few years after moving to Sydney. I wanted to be my own boss and thought I could bring something original to the swimwear space. Since then I've evolved into prêt à porter and the brand is growing step by step!

Where did your business name come from?
Our brand name combines two things I love! Yellow is a favourite colour of mine and the jungle represents adventures in the wild, mystery and courage.

My first creation was…
For Yellow Jungle it was the Alice swimsuit, named after my niece. I designed it thinking of her and it turned out great.

Currently, binge-watching…
Rosehaven, on the ABC. I'm looking forward to being able to travel again so I can visit Tasmania.

Best business advice you’ve received…
Probably to take a step back from time to time. We're so busy in the day-to-day things that it's easy to forget the big picture.

Favourite piece in your current collection
Definitely the Sydney swimsuit. I love it and the response to it from the community has been amazing too.

What can’t you live without?
Guacamole.

I’m always inspired by…
Kids books are my main source of inspiration these days, they're always so creative and dreamy.
I'm also very much into beautiful magazines. At the moment my favourite is Lunch Lady, I haven't missed an issue!

Summer or Winter?
Summer for sure!

My home is…
A jungle! I've got so many houseplants I lost count.

I admire…
Strong women who juggle their professional and personal lives.

Every morning I…
Cuddle my loved ones.

Last book you read?
The Little Red Hen, with my son!

If you could collab with anyone who would it be?
My dream collab would be with the designers at Monoprix.

Dream holiday destination…
At the moment I dream of Japan, but I also cannot wait to go back to Italy.
Yellow Jungle celebrate and encourage the imagination of our little ones through playful patterns and clothes which are both fun to wear and comfortable - if you are interested in becoming a wholesale stockists please get in touch today. Yellow Jungle will be available to purchase in WA stores from January 2021.

Getting to know Joanne - The brains behind Kids Fashion House Minihaha Hiawatha

30/11/2020

A big welcome to Joanne, the creative mind behind Australian children's fashion staple Minihaha.

Joanne has an inspiring story of humble beginnings back in 1993 with an idea for a range of children's clothing. Since then, Minihaha has grown to include children's clothing labels Bebe, Bebe White Label, Fox & Finch and Minihaha Swim.

These labels are now children's fashion brands synonymous with quality and style, offering Aussie kids clothing to suit all areas of their busy little lives!.
Picture
How did you get started?
Hi, My name is Joanne Sackville and I started Minihaha and Hiawatha in 1993 when I moved to Australia. Having lived the previous 5 years in Bali. I had been designing and manufacturing womenswear for large English fashion companies as well as co-owing and running a factory of my own over there.
I met my ex-husband who was on holiday and moved to Australia to be with him. Hiawatha commenced shortly after when I saw a gap in the kids wear ranges for a European look, fashion forward range of clothing and shoes.

Where did your business name come from?
The first collection I presented was made from exquisite beige suede and was fringed American Indian style pants, shirts and jackets. The name Hiawatha came from the fact the collection was so inspired from the American Indian/Pocahontas genre.
The Collection has grown and morphed over the years and is now a blend of classical traditional pieces to on trend, directional fashion forward styles which cater to every taste from young mums to Grandma's!

Favourite piece in your current collection…
Its is very hard to pick just on favourite piece in the W21 Collection we are currently selling but I would say in Bebe it would be the Elena Print bodysuit. (I can visualise this teamed back with the Nutmeg cardigan and bonnet and some of our pointelle cream tights and little boots to make the perfect outfit!)
In Fox and Finch, the Winter Garden Navy Stripe embroidered romper would be my favourite piece and in fact I love this story as a whole!

Your favourite quote…
My favourite Quote would be have to be "Never give up!" and "Don't sweat the small stuff".

On the weekend you’ll find me…
In the Summer on the weekend you'll find me on our boat or at the beach with friends sailing in the bay, soaking up the sun and enjoying the tranquility of the ocean.

Summer or Winter?
I am very much a summer girl though I love a week of skiiing in the winter!

I admire…
I admire the Victorian families with young children who have managed to get through these last few months of home schooling as well and working full time with out completely losing the plot!

Every morning I…
Every morning I start my day with a 25km bike ride along the river being inspired by the nature all around me or taking our Belgian Shepherd puppy up to the park to play.

My dream dinner party guest list…
Due to Covid, after a year and a half of not seeing my son, Jamie who lives in the States and nearly a year of not seeing my mum, brother and family living in London, my dream dinner party would be having them all under one roof and being able to lap up the sheer pleasure of being able to give them a big hug.

Dream holiday destination...
Right now as we are in ISO and not allowed to venture more than 25km from home, my dream holiday destination would be anywhere warm, sunny and with a quiet beach! The Maldives would be the absolute dream when the day comes that we can travel again!

Thank you so much Joanne for taking the time to join us here at Knee High Agencies.

Getting to know : Annica the Designer at Alphabet Soup Kids Surf and Skate Brand

23/11/2020

No one knows what boys want to wear like today's guest, designer Annica Derby from Australian label Alphabet Soup.
Born from a love of colours, graphics & photography, Alphabet Soup has a rad range of boys fashion designed to be as comfortable as they are cool. Welcome, Annica.
Picture

Tell us a little about Alphabet Soup?
Alphabet Soup is a streetwear brand designed for the little thrill seekers out there. It’s designed right here in Melbourne for the curious explorers that take their clothes through a lot of outdoor adventures that demands some good quality clothes that can hang in there season after season.
We focus on working with some talented artists and always add some fun graphics on our styles that all ages can enjoy. I have grown up myself very much in love with the skate and snowboard scene and have skated and snowboarded for over 15 years.
When the opportunity came to design for A/S it was quite a natural choice for me to add my love for streetwear and surf and skate inspired clothing. We have long catered for the size 1-12 age, but from next season we have taken it up to size 14 as the demand for bigger sizes has been very strong.

How did you get started? I started as a graphic designer and illustrator working for several brands doing graphics for their clothing. I have worked with some great labels such as Mini and Maximus from (USA) and Munsterkids (AUS) and l learnt a lot about the garment industry while doing that.
I also use to have a blog called Minor De:tales where I gathered everything I found inspirational from the kids universe and had a chance to collaborate with a lot of interesting kids brands from around the world. I also freelanced as a photographer and shot a few clothing campaigns before I started designing.
My love for kids clothing and particular boys clothing started many years ago when I had my own kids. I think it’s quite natural to want to dress your kids in fun, comfortable and cool clothing. You end up dressing them a lot so why not make sure it’s in memorable favourites.

My first creation was… A mini tee with a Totoro print for my baby daughter.

Currently, binge-watching… Just went through Stranger Things for the second time with my kids, nothing beats lockdown as a trip into the upside down universe.

The best advice I’ve been given…Trust your instincts and have a little faith in fate.

Favourite piece in your current collection… We just got a new Summer collection coming which is exciting. I am loving the new Go To Tees which has some great summery washes. The Acid Sky is my favourite. I also like the graphics we designed for the Beached Shirt/Short and the Legacy Crew is pretty rad with a nod to all things retro.

Your favourite quote…You can’t use up creativity, the more you use the more you have! – Maya Angelou

On the weekend you’ll find me…Outside in nature with a camera in hand.

What can’t you live without? Right now? In lockdown here in Melbourne.. a weekend firepit in the backyard and a chance to go over the week’s events with the family under the stars. Preferably with a cold beer in hand.

I’m always inspired by…Everything! Colours, films, animation, books, magazines, anything can set off a creative avalanche in my mind which I am grateful of.

Summer or Winter? Summer if I can spend it in the swell, or Winter if I can enjoy the snow. But nothing can beat that first warm Spring day or the surprisingly hot Autumn day.

My home is… where my family is.

I need…Scandinavian salt liquorice every now and then!

Every morning I…Go for a walk along the beach to get the creative juices going and get a big cup of coffee.

Last book you read? So The Wind Won’t Blow It All Away by Richard Brautigan.

My dream dinner party guest list…Oh wow.. let’s see Rick Baker (monster maker extraordinaire) for all movie questions and set stories, Viggo Mortensen for all my art and photography questions and Ruth E. Carter for all those amazing film costume design stories.

If you could collab with anyone who would it be? Love the whimsical brand Lazy Oaf and Ozzy Wrong always does such fun creations with Volcom. Both which would be fun to collab with for a fun and colourful kids brand.

Dream holiday destination…I am not picky these days! Even a weekend away from the house would be amazing, but I still dream of doing that North American road trip that Allen Ginsberg got me so fascinated with in my 20s.

What an awesome insight into what makes Alphabet Soup one of the leading labels in Australian kids style, thanks so much Annica! Here at Knee High Agencies I'm excited to be able to show you the complete Alphabet Soup range of clothing & accessories.

Picture
Tell us a little about the brands at The Stella Agency:
Doudou et Compagnie/Histoire D’Ours are soft plush toys from France.  A family business since 1999, beautifully gift boxed bears, rabbits, hippos, mice, elephants and lots of others.  A variety of sizes and colours and beautiful soft textures.
Condor are socks and tights, made in Spain (Barcelona).  The Condor product retains shape and colour after washing and no pilling.  Over 40 colours available in our ribbed tights & socks.

How did you get started?
I started in Children’s wear in 1990 as a Retailer in Adelaide.  Then later moved to Sydney to work for OshKosh B’Gosh in store and then in later years in  Head Office as National Retail Manager, where I probably got the best education in everything retail, wholesale, distribution, customer service and much more.  In 2005 I decided to set up as an Agent and that’s when The Stella Agency came to fruition.

Where did your business name come from?
Stella is the name of my niece and it also means Star in Italian, that’s how The Stella Agency came about.

Currently, binge-watching….
Just finished WHY WOMEN KILL on SBS Demand.

Best business advice you’ve received…
"Never owe more than you own" and another favourite which I pass on to a lot of Retailers “if in doubt leave out".

The best advice I’ve been given…
Always look on the brighter side of every situation.

Favourite piece in your current collection…
In my Histoire D’Ours collection, I just love the HO2581 chocolate bear in the round box - he is the colour of a hot chocolate and so fluffy.  In the Condor, what’s not to love but the rainbow of colours.

Before COVID days normally out for lunch or dinner, fruit & veg shopping at the markets and cooking.

I’m always inspired by…
Positive people.

Feeling very international after hearing from Tiziana! Maybe we can’t travel internationally right now, but we can still appreciate these two wonderful brands from across the globe, bringing us beautiful toys from Doudou et Compagnie/Histoire D’Ours & France, and tights & socks worthy of the international fashion scene from bustling Barcelona with Condor. How did you get started?
I started while on maternity leave after having my daughter Ellory (now 5.5). I felt sick at the idea of going back and working in Hotel and Restaurant Management again after years in hospitality with those long days and shifts. Back then I was also Brand Repping for so many amazing brands with Ellory (she even has her Instagram page @ellorysworld). After getting to know so many wonderful mommas behind the brands I thought “if they can do it so can I” So I thought , what am I passionate about ? Well, being 100% Italian, the answer was food! I loved preparing meals for my family and watching Ellory learning and experimenting with new food, so I got my pen and paper and started drafting ideas for an eco-friendly plate. Within 5 months Emondo Kids launched!

Where did your business name come from?
When deciding for a name I had 2 things I wanted to incorporate:
1- My Italian heritage.
2- Ellory, the reason why I started.
And since she had her Instagram page called @ellorysworld I decided to twist that a bit into my business name, so E stands for Ellory and Mondo means World in Italian. There you have it. Emondo Kids!

My first creation was…
Karri the Koala. I had only been in Australia as a permanent resident for 6 years and I knew I wanted to stick to the Australiana theme. Who doesn’t love koalas right? So I lay on my tiny apartment floor, and in between playing with Ellory, sketched our beloved (and still most popular ) Karri the Koala!

Currently, binge-watching…
Oh gee… thanks to COVID19 binge watching has been my evening pastime! We have just finished watching Ray Donovan and now watching Lucifer thanks to a friend that got me addicted. I am married but I don’t mind a bit of evil eye candy with a British accent! LOL (sorry hubby)

Best business advice you’ve received…
Don’t wait until you have it all perfect to launch, if you have an idea get it out there as soon as you can, otherwise somebody else will do it before you! You can always adjust and evolve as you go.
Also, DON’T COPY other people sh*t! Not cool.

The best advice I’ve been given…
Network and collaborate. Get to know other business owners, brand reps, network your heart out and collaborate. I have created long lasting friendships doing this and it has taken my business further then anything!

Favourite piece in your current collection…
I’d have to say the Rainbow purely cause its so versatile, functional and pretty. It ticks all the boxes :)

Your favourite quote…
People do not care how much you know until they know how much you care

On the weekend you’ll find me…
Outdoors for sure. Either going for walks, parks or mostly the beach as we are lucky to live on the Sunshine Coast and even now in the middle of winter the beach is amazing! Then eating yummy food and watching movies with my family :)

What can’t you live without?
Italian food! Especially Pizza! Yup, I said it! I just LOVE FOOD! ALL FOOD!

I’m always inspired by…
Peoples amazing creativity and success stories.

Summer or Winter?
Winter, purely cause we live in Queensland and summer is way too hot and humid!

My home is…
Argh.. this is hard, I kind of have 3 homes, Italy, London and now Australia.

I admire…
Smart people. I have never been very academic, at all. I was the creative one that got distracted and couldn’t retain any information from books. LOL. So when I meet friends with fancy degrees and vocabulary I really admire them.

I need…
Silence, quiet and peace after spending time with a lot of people. I consider myself both an extrovert and an introvert, I love being around people, especially my friends, but after a lot of socialising (such as expos, trade shows, markets or networking events) I feel absolutely drained and I need to fill up my bucket by being with my family in quiet and peace :)

Every morning I…
Well, this is an easy one. DRINK COFFEE! it’s the first thing I do, even Ellory knows that “mummy doesn’t function without coffee” !

Last book you read?
Purple Cow by Seth Godin

My dream dinner party guest list…
All my good friends and family, including all those from Italy that I never get to see, especially my mum, dad, brother and his family :(

If you could collab with anyone who would it be?
Oooh, that’s a tricky one! @weanin15_(aka @thebodycoach ), @real_mumma, @joshandjenna and @jimmyrees_ are some of my favourites!

3 favourite words…
Passion, honesty and belief.

Dream holiday destination…
At the moment Italy, I was meant to go home to spend Christmas with my family this year after 15 years and then COVID19 happened and there is talk that no international travel will happen until 2024 ! So I am devastated! Last time I saw them was nearly 3 years ago! :( But apart for that I will have to say Japan!

Thank you Sharon, it was wonderful getting a sneak peek into your life & the background of Emondu Kids. You’ve got us hungry with all that talk of delicious Italian food! If you need some Emondu Kids in your life, contact me to chat! I’d love to introduce you to this amazing range.

Getting to Know: Tasha from Little Lords - Cool Clothes for Cool kids

20/10/2020

Today we are chatting with the lovely Tasha, founder, owner, and designer of the super cool kids clothing brand, Little Lords - right here in Perth!

This brand is not just about being cool, it's about providing your kids with quality, comfortable, stylish threads that are ethically made - and they sure do deliver...

So, lets take some time to get to know Tasha!
Picture

Tell us a little about Little Lords…

Little Lords began simply because I wanted to dress my new baby boy in cool clothes - not your every day stuff from the big chain stores. We definitely saw a gap in the market for stylish but edgy, good quality and easy to wear clothing for boys.. We later added a girls range when my daughter was born because there was no way I was letting her miss out! Our collections are inspired by our Aussie lifestyle & our own memories of being kids ourselves – being surrounded by cool music, Summer beach days, hanging out at the skatepark and just being free and having fun.

What started as a little creative outlet for me as a first time Mum, has now become a full time brand, stocked in over 30 kids stores in Australia & NZ.

My first creation was…
The first Tee I ever designed was a simple screen printed tee with the slogan “Mama’s Boy, So What” – just a cheeky take on being a mama’s boy. It was so popular, especially with my Instagram community. I would get tagged hundreds of times a day in pics of kids wearing this tee! I could barely keep it on the shelves and I think it’s fair to say it put Little Lords on the map as a kids brand.

The best business advice I’ve received…
It would have to be the saying “You do you, no one is you and that is your strength” or something like that Lol.. basically stay in your lane and stop worrying about what everyone else is doing. There is so much noise out there, so many copycats, so many other brands to compare yourself to, but if you’re focusing on that, you’re not focusing on your own brand and creativity..

Favourite piece in your current collection…
Our new Summer collection includes some cool Xmas tees – not the kind of cheesy ones you get at Kmart! My fave would have to be the “Naughty, but Nice Tee” Cool artwork on a tartan tee brings all the 90’s vibes I love - plus it’s something that could be worn after Xmas too.

My dream dinner party guestlist would be…
OK this is easy.. Dave Grohl who I’ve been obsessed with since I was about 15, My gorgeous husband & My dad who’s not with us anymore – I think these 3 men would get on like a house on fire

Getting to Know: Kate from OB Designs Eco Baby Toys

6/10/2020

I’m loving getting to know the people behind the brands & labels available here at Knee High Agencies. As Perth’s premier children’s wholesaler, I’m always looking to provide my clients with quality stock for their stores. Sustainability & eco products are becoming an increasingly popular choice & I’m proud to stock OB Designs, an Australian business with some gorgeous baby eco essentials and toys. Let’s meet Kate & find out more about OB Designs.
Picture
How did you get started?
After I graduated University of Florida, I casually sold Jewellery from Indonesia to the USA & Australia to fund my travels. When I immigrated to Australia, I decided to learn international trade in-depth, so I landed a job at Cape Byron Imports as a buyer. It was a fabulous crash course on how to develop and import products. Then, I fell pregnant with Evie 18 months into my job. At that point, I gained enough experience to feel confident going out on my own which was my end goal anyway.

Where did your business name come from?
It started back in 2008, when we were thinking of a fun name for the company that captivated what we were about.
Our Wooden Teether Toys were very unusual, and our angle was to have Unique products. We originally called it Odd Bod Designs but then we changed it to O.B. Designs when we became a company. It sounded a bit more professional. Leesa (Original partner) and I used to joke that one of us was Odd and the other Bod but we could never quite agree on who was who.

My first creation was…
The Dingaring 3 in 1 toy. It’s a teething ring, rattle and soft toy all in one! We still it to this day but it is now called it a "Wooden Teether toy". I still love this toy and believe it is the BEST first baby toy on the market.

Currently, binge-watching…
"Alone".  A series that started on The History Channel a few years ago about Hardcore survivalists seek to stay alive in extreme locations around the world. It is family friendly and we enjoy watching it together.

Best business advice you’ve received…
"Back yourself and be confident".

The best advice I’ve been given…
In life you have to be willing to give 90% and get back 10% sometimes.

Favourite piece in your current collection…
Ah this is a tough one.... Impossible to answer really! I love everything we create but the new Duke dog and Byron Bunny are So cute! Plus, the Canopy in Cinnamon and Rose Petal Pink. Our new crochet lines and ecofriendly teether toys are gorgeous too!! This 2020 Collection is our most beautiful designs to date, and we are just so proud of everything we have created.

Your favourite quote…
“Trust your instincts”. What good is intuition if you let second-guessing drown it out? The worst enemy of success is self-doubt.

On the weekend you’ll find me…
Hanging with my husband and 3 kids. We love hiking and surfing.

What can’t you live without?
My Family.

I’m always inspired by…
Heaps! Mother Nature most of all, fashion models, Interior design, Contemporary Artists and Fashion Labels.

Summer or Winter?
Autumn.

My home is…
Lennox Head, NSW.

Every morning I…
Drink coffee and exercise.

Last book you read?
Where the Crawdads Sing by Delia Owens - Great book!

If you could collab with anyone who would it be?
 An Indigenous artist.

Dream holiday destination…
Morocco, Russia or Chile.

Thank you Kate! If you’re looking for more sustainable baby products or kids eco products, the range from OB Designs is gorgeous. Contact me directly for more information on OB Designs and all of the other options I have available here at Knee High Agencies.
